South Africa’s academic calendar is set for a structured 2026 school year.

As Term 1 concludes on Friday, 27 March, learners will enjoy a short break before returning for Term 2 on 8 April. The Department of Basic Education has implemented a uniform start to the school year to enhance consistency across inland and coastal schools.

South Africa’s 2026 School Calendar Overview

The 2026 academic year is organized into four terms, totaling 205 school days. Term 1 runs from 14 January to 27 March, followed by Term 2 from 8 April to 26 June. Term 3 will take place from 21 July to 23 September, and Term 4 will conclude the year from 6 October to 9 December.

In addition to the school days, there are 28 days of school holidays and five public holidays throughout the year. This structure aims to balance teaching time with adequate rest periods for students.

Additionally, Monday, 15 June has been designated as an extra school holiday, creating a long weekend ahead of Youth Day on Tuesday, 16 June. This adjustment was made following consultations with education authorities and stakeholders.
