South Africa and South Sudan leaders discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation

South Africa and South Sudan are enhancing their bilateral cooperation to foster economic growth and political stability.

During a recent meeting in Pretoria, Deputy President Shipokosa Paulus Mashatile and President Salva Kiir Mayardit discussed key areas of collaboration, including mining, transport, and tourism. They agreed to host a South Africa–South Sudan Business and Investment Conference in Juba between May and June 2026.

Strengthening Economic Ties Between South Africa and South Sudan

The leaders emphasized the importance of deepening cooperation in various economic sectors. The upcoming Business and Investment Conference aims to unlock investment opportunities and promote trade between the two nations.

Both countries are also exploring the feasibility of a visa-free travel regime, with relevant departments assessing the situation. Recommendations are expected by the end of April 2026.

Support for Peace and Political Processes in South Sudan

President Kiir acknowledged South Africa’s ongoing support for implementing the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan. The discussions included support for inclusive political participation and civil society engagement ahead of elections.

South Africa has committed to providing technical assistance for electoral processes and facilitating the National Dialogue scheduled for April 2026. This commitment underscores South Africa’s dedication to fostering stability in South Sudan.
