“Don’t Miss the Premiere of ‘Malaga Alley’ at Cairo International Film Festival – A Tribute to Khaled El Nabawy!”

Excitement Builds at the 46th Cairo International Film Festival

As cinematic enthusiasts gather in Cairo, the 46th Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) is poised to deliver a spectacular showcase of creativity and talent from across the globe. One of the festival’s highlights is the highly anticipated Middle East and North Africa premiere of Maryam Touzani’s poignant film, “Malaga Alley,” set to unfold this Sunday. The screening will take place at the prestigious Cairo Opera House’s Grand Theatre at 6:00 PM, as part of the festival’s competitive International section.

“Malaga Alley” is a remarkable cinematic collaboration, co-produced by Morocco, France, Spain, Germany, and Belgium. This 116-minute film, delivered in both Arabic and Spanish, tells the compelling story of Maria Angeles, a 79-year-old Spanish woman who has settled into a tranquil life in Tangier, Morocco. However, her serene existence is thrust into chaos when her daughter arrives from Madrid with plans to sell the apartment that has been her sanctuary. The film not only delves into Maria’s struggle to preserve her home but also explores themes of love and self-discovery, revealing the unexpected joys that can blossom from challenging times.

The talented Maryam Touzani, a native of Tangier, has established herself as a formidable force in the film industry as a director, screenwriter, and actress. Her previous works, including “Adam” (2019) and “The Blue Caftan” (2022), have garnered acclaim at international film festivals, shining a light on the rich storytelling traditions of Moroccan cinema.

Later on, at 9:00 PM, the festival will pay tribute to celebrated actor Khaled El Nabawy with a special screening of Youssef Chahine’s 1994 masterpiece, “The Emigrant,” as part of its Gala and Cairo Classics programme. This screening not only honors El Nabawy’s illustrious career but also marks the occasion of him receiving the Faten Hamama Excellence Award at this year’s festival. “The Emigrant” is a beloved classic in modern Egyptian cinema, portraying the journey of Ram, a young man in pursuit of knowledge against the backdrop of Egypt’s historic political landscape.

Established in 1976, the Cairo International Film Festival is one of the Arab world’s oldest and most esteemed film festivals, recognized by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF). Held annually and supported by Egypt’s Ministry of Culture, CIFF continues to celebrate the art of filmmaking, fostering international dialogues and cultural exchanges.

As the lights dim and the audience gathers, the CIFF promises to be a celebration of artistic expression, cultural narratives, and cinematic excellence that reflects the diverse voices of the Arab world and beyond.
