Film-Ocean Boosts Fleet with Major ROV Investment: A Step Forward for Subsea Services

In an exciting development for the subsea sector, Film-Ocean Ltd, a prominent player in submerged operations, is ramping up its capabilities with a substantial investment in cutting-edge technology. In collaboration with its parent company STAPEM, Film-Ocean has ordered three new Work-Class Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) from SMD, a move set to enhance the company’s service offerings and meet the growing demand for subsea services across the globe.

This strategic acquisition includes two SMD Quantum® 250-hp heavy-duty work-class ROVs and one SMD Atom® ultra-compact work-class ROV. Scott Jenney, the CEO of Film-Ocean, shared insights on this investment, highlighting its significance: “Adding these vehicles is a major step in the ongoing development of our fleet and a notable financial commitment,” he stated.

The Quantum ROVs provide high specifications and are designed for heavy-duty offshore construction tasks. They will be equipped with active heave compensated launch and recovery systems (LARS), ensuring they operate efficiently in challenging marine environments. The compact Atom ROV, on the other hand, is tailored for inspection, survey, and light construction duties, broadening Film-Ocean’s operational versatility.

Mike Mackie, Operations Director at Film-Ocean, echoed the excitement, noting, “These new systems give us greater flexibility and capacity to support our clients’ projects. With the backing of STAPEM, we are well-positioned to deliver safe and high-quality subsea services worldwide.”

As demand for subsea services surges, especially in regions like West Africa, the timing of this investment couldn’t be better. Mike Jones, Chairman at SMD, emphasized the collaborative nature of this endeavor: “We are pleased to continue our partnership with Film-Ocean. These ROVs are engineered to deliver reliable performance in demanding offshore environments and will assist Film-Ocean in meeting the increasing demand for projects in West Africa.”

Looking ahead, the delivery schedule for the new ROVs is set for October 2025 and January 2026 for the Quantum models, while the Atom is expected in the second quarter of 2026. This investment not only underscores Film-Ocean’s commitment to advancing technology but also their dedication to supporting vital inspection, repair, maintenance, and decommissioning projects in the region.

As the subsea market continues to evolve, Film-Ocean is positioning itself for success, confirming its status as a leader in the industry. With innovative technology at their fingertips, the company is set to address the needs of clients seeking reliable and high-quality subsea solutions.
