Exciting Progress: New Sandton Drive Link Bridge Takes Shape!

In an exciting development for the bustling heart of Sandton, South Africa, Growthpoint Properties has officially kicked off construction on the new Sandton Drive Link Bridge. This ambitious infrastructure project aims to revolutionize pedestrian access between the iconic The Place at 1 Sandton Drive office building and the expansive Sandton City shopping center, enhancing the interconnectedness of this vibrant urban hub.

With a budget of R26 million, this bridge represents Growthpoint’s commitment to improving the urban landscape and providing a safe and seamless route for pedestrians. The Link Bridge will serve as a key artery in the area, designed to facilitate a smooth flow of foot traffic while also introducing a striking new landmark to the skyline. This initiative not only enhances accessibility but also enriches the community’s experience of the Sandton area.

The bridge will be open to the public during daylight hours, with limited access at night for security purposes. On the east side, it will be easily reachable from the balcony of The Place, leading pedestrians across Sandton Drive to the upper parking deck of Sandton City, conveniently located near the Woolworths entrance.

Construction of the Link Bridge prioritizes safety and durability, as highlighted by Growthpoint. The architectural design showcases an angular, balustraded walkway that is elegantly clad in stainless steel. Perhaps the most captivating feature is the central covered glass viewing deck. This unique space will provide visitors with panoramic views of the Sandton skyline, with its eco-friendly illumination poised to change colors in celebration of various seasons and local events.

Currently, the stainless steel sections and glass elements are being meticulously crafted offsite, while the concrete support columns and walkway are coming together just beside Sandton Drive. The prefabricated sections will be expertly assembled on site, marking a significant step in this innovative project.

Neil Schloss, head of asset management at Growthpoint, shared his excitement about seeing this long-cherished vision realized. “This bridge delivers on Growthpoint’s promise to tenants of The Place at 1 Sandton Drive. Together with our partners – Sandton City, Sandton Central Management District, and the City of Johannesburg – we’ve overcome numerous obstacles to create a vital new link,” he stated.

Sandton City has been recognized as a pivotal supporter of this project, showcasing the collaborative spirit that drives urban development in the region. As the project unfolds, it promises to not only foster greater connectivity but also contribute to the overall growth and modernization of Sandton, further solidifying its status as a leading business and shopping destination in Africa.
