Get ready, South Africa! The annual Shavathon organized by the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) is just around the corner, kicking off on Saturday, March 1. With this year’s compelling theme, “Fearless Hair to Show You Care,” the event aims to celebrate the courage of cancer survivors and foster a sense of community support for those impacted by the disease.
Cansa spokesperson, Lucy Balona, highlighted the profound message behind the theme, emphasizing the incredible resilience displayed by cancer survivors. “The theme serves as a poignant reminder of their journeys and the strength they exhibit every day,” Balona shared. Now in its 23rd year, the Shavathon has established itself as a cherished tradition, eagerly anticipated by many who wish to show solidarity with friends and family facing cancer treatment.
For many, losing their hair is a common and challenging side effect of cancer therapies. Shaving heads or spraying hair in vibrant colors has become a powerful, symbolic gesture of support. Balona noted, “It’s not just about hair; it’s about raising awareness and showing that we care.” Participants can also contribute by donating hair to create wigs for cancer survivors, adding an extra layer of meaning to the event.
Joining the Shavathon is easy and affordable, with participation fees set at R50 for adults and R25 for children under 12. All the funds raised will go directly to Cansa, allowing them to provide vital services such as counseling, medical equipment rentals, and even breast prostheses for cancer patients, caregivers, and their families. As Balona expressed, “Every contribution makes a difference.”
Moreover, the funds will also support initiatives like pop-up clinics for cancer screenings and lifestyle risk assessments, making a notable impact in raising cancer awareness across communities.
If you’re in KwaZulu-Natal, make sure to visit some of the popular malls hosting the Shavathon, including:
- Liberty Midlands Mall from 9 AM to 5 PM at the Checkers and Pick n Pay court on March 1 and 2.

- The Pavilion Shopping Centre from 9 AM to 7 PM on March 1 and 2 at the centre court.
- Gateway from 9 AM to 9 PM on March 1 at the food court.
