Richards Bay Minerals Strengthens Renewable Energy Commitments with New Agreement in South Africa
In an exciting development for South Africa’s renewable energy landscape, Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) has announced its third Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Red Rocket South Africa (Pty) Ltd, paving the way for the construction of the Overberg Wind Farm in the picturesque Western Cape. This monumental partnership underscores RBM’s commitment to transitioning towards cleaner energy sources while contributing significantly to the country’s sustainable development goals.
Construction of the Overberg Wind Farm, located near the charming town of Swellendam, is slated to kick off in the first half of 2025. With an ambitious target for initial energy production set for December 2026, this project aims to harness wind power effectively—an eco-friendly measure that aligns with global efforts to combat climate change. Not only will this facility generate an impressive 230MW of power, but it is also projected to reduce RBM’s annual greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 30%, equivalent to 0.7 million tons of CO2 equivalent.
RBM now boasts around 500MW of renewable energy commitments through various PPAs, making a significant stride in the shift toward sustainable energy. In June 2024, they signed a PPA for the Khangela Emoyeni Wind Farm, a project designed to deliver about 460GWh of renewable energy per year. Furthermore, the earlier Bolobedu Solar PV initiative, with its potential to yield 300GWh annually, is also in progress, demonstrating RBM’s comprehensive approach to diversifying energy sources.
Werner Duvenhage, Managing Director of RBM and Rio Tinto’s African Operations, emphasized the urgency of this transition, especially following the United Nations International Day of Clean Energy on January 26, 2025. “We are committed to displacing coal-generated electricity with innovative renewable solutions. This is just one of the actions we are taking to achieve our goal of reducing emissions by 50% by 2030 and reaching net-zero by 2050,” he stated.
Matteo Brambilla, CEO of Red Rocket, hailed the partnership as a crucial milestone in promoting clean energy across South Africa. He expressed pride in supporting RBM’s initiatives and highlighted the importance of this contribution to the country’s overall energy transition.
With RBM consuming a substantial 1.8 Terawatt-hours of electricity annually, this move not only stands to benefit the company but also fosters a greener future for the entire nation. As South Africa works towards enhancing its renewable energy portfolio, initiatives like the Overberg Wind Farm could serve as a blueprint for future projects across the continent.
As Richards Bay Minerals continues on this path, it sets a compelling example for businesses across Africa and beyond, driving the conversation on sustainable energy forward. Stay tuned for more developments in renewable energy across the continent!
