Celebrate Arbour Month: Plant Trees for a Greener South Africa
As the heatwaves of spring and summer approach, the call to action becomes clear: it’s time to plant trees! In celebration of Arbour Month this September, communities across South Africa are encouraged to join in this vital initiative aimed at promoting environmental conservation and adding a touch of greenery to urban landscapes.
Planting trees is not just about beautifying our surroundings—it’s a critical step in combating climate change and fostering a healthier ecosystem. Trees play a pivotal role in reducing soil erosion, enhancing soil fertility, retaining moisture, and offering essential shade during the sizzling months. This year, the campaign highlights the immense benefits of trees, encouraging citizens to get their hands dirty and plant for the future.
In a tradition that encourages reflection on our natural surroundings, each Arbour Month features two trees—the common and the rare. The common tree of the year for 2023 is Searsia lancea, a robust shade tree perfect for gardens and city pavements. Not only does it provide cooling shade, but it also draws in beneficial insects such as bees, thanks to its fragrant blooms—a boon for local biodiversity.
On the rare side, we have the stunning Euphorbia sekukuniensis, affectionately known as the sekhukhune naboom, thriving in hot climates and rocky soils. This charming tree is a favorite for many pollinators, including butterflies and bees, making it a delight to have in any garden.
Zweli Dlamini, spokesperson for the City of Ekurhuleni, emphasizes the importance of these initiatives, particularly in urban areas with higher carbon emissions. “Advocating for tree planting is crucial for oxygen production and the preservation of our local ecosystems,” he stated.
This year, as South Africans gear up for the warmer months, let’s embrace the spirit of Arbour Month by planting trees that will not only beautify our environment but also contribute to a more sustainable future. Join your local community this September and be a part of the growing movement to enhance South Africa’s natural beauty while combating climate challenges!
