China Orders Citizens to Evacuate Eswatini Amid Security Concerns

China has issued a security warning for its citizens in Eswatini, urging immediate evacuation due to rising risks.

The Chinese foreign ministry cited rampant cyber fraud and online gambling as major concerns. This advisory follows the arrest of around 200 foreign nationals, including at least 55 Chinese citizens, in connection with illegal activities in the country.

China’s Urgent Warning to Citizens in Eswatini

On May 1, China extended a zero-tariff policy to all African countries except Eswatini. Following this, the Chinese government advised its citizens to leave Eswatini immediately, citing security risks. The ministry’s statement highlighted the dangers of remaining in the country, emphasizing that those who choose to stay may face extremely high security risks.

Eswatini, one of Taiwan’s few remaining diplomatic allies, has been under scrutiny due to recent law enforcement actions against illegal online gambling and cyber fraud. The Eswatini government has responded to China’s claims, stating that the assertion of security risks is unsupported and regrettable.

Eswatini’s Response to China’s Security Claims

The Eswatini government has firmly rejected China’s security concerns, asserting that the arrests of foreign nationals demonstrate the effectiveness of its law enforcement. Authorities emphasized their commitment to maintaining sovereignty and not being coerced by external pressures regarding diplomatic relations.

Eswatini’s commerce ministry noted that over 200 Chinese nationals are currently working in various sectors, including textiles and retail. The government aims to reassure both residents and foreign nationals of their safety and the country’s stability.

Next Steps for Chinese Nationals in Eswatini

  • Chinese nationals are advised to evacuate or relocate to safer areas.
  • Eswatini authorities continue to monitor the situation regarding foreign nationals.
  • Further statements from the Eswatini government are expected to clarify security measures.

China’s warning highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by foreign nationals in Eswatini.
