South Africa Prepares for the 65th SAPP Meetings: A New Era for Energy Collaboration

The energy landscape in Southern Africa is about to witness a significant milestone as the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA), in collaboration with the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), gears up to host its 65th SAPP Meetings. Themed “Let’s not gamble with energy in the Southern Africa Power Pool and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Region,” this event is poised to highlight the critical importance of a well-thought-out energy policy prioritizing long-term stability over fleeting gains.

Among the highlights will be the official opening of the Management Committee (MANCO) Meeting by Mrs. Samantha Jane Graham-Maré, the Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy for South Africa, on September 5, 2025. This meeting will cap several days of intensive discussions, with subcommittee sessions scheduled from September 1-4, 2025. The MANCO collects insights from these preliminary meetings to forge a cohesive path forward for sustainable energy development across the region.

The SAPP, established in 1995 during a SADC summit in Kempton Park, South Africa, has been a driving force in harmonizing electricity supply across its member countries, which now include twelve nations with an impressive collective capacity of 83,875 MW. By nurturing collaboration among these countries, the SAPP aims to enhance regional integration and address the pressing energy challenges faced by the Southern African region.

This upcoming gathering is more than just a series of formal discussions—it represents a commitment to unite efforts to tackle energy issues in the face of rapid economic changes and environmental concerns. The SAPP’s focus on a diversified and balanced energy approach reflects a strategic mindset essential for fostering a resilient and integrated energy system.

As the region navigates the complexities of energy demands and sustainability, events like the 65th SAPP Meetings serve as a pivotal platform for stakeholders to share insights, formulate actionable plans, and embrace innovative solutions, ensuring that Southern Africa moves towards a brighter energy future.

Stay tuned for updates on this important event, which not only emphasizes collaboration but also champions the potential of regional partnerships in shaping a sustainable energy landscape.
