“Global Call: Advocating for the Formation of the Africa Commission”

In a groundbreaking address at the AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum (ACTIF2025) held in St. George’s, Grenada, Prof. Benedict Oramah, the outgoing President of the Africa Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), called for the creation of what he terms a “sovereign Global Africa Commission.” This initiative aims to foster long-term economic integration between Africa and the Caribbean, marking a hopeful step forward in international collaboration at a time of global uncertainty.

The fourth ACTIF2025, themed “Resilience and Transformation: Enhancing Africa-Caribbean Economic Cooperation in an Era of Global Uncertainty,” underscores the necessity for robust partnerships in navigating the complexities of today’s economic landscape. Oramah’s call for the establishment of the commission is aimed at driving forward strategic initiatives that encompass trade, cultural exchange, education, and creative industries—essential elements in building a strong, united front between Africa and its Caribbean allies.

As Prof. Oramah prepares to hand the reins to Dr. George Elombi, the institution’s long-standing Executive Vice President, he expressed confidence in his successor’s abilities to propel the bank’s mission and enhance the synergy between the two regions. “At this critical moment in our collective history, I have no shred of doubt that he is the right person to lead us in the next phase of the bank’s journey,” he shared, acknowledging the importance of continued support for the Africa-Caribbean partnership.

The proposal for the Global Africa Commission, which would be supported by Afreximbank, the CARICOM Secretariat, and the African Union, is a visionary step towards institutionalizing the existing bonds between these areas. “What we have done so far is prove the concept; we now need to institutionalize it,” Oramah noted, emphasizing the need for a dedicated body to streamline operations and foster innovation.

Adding a poignant note to his remarks, Oramah highlighted the importance of prioritizing African interests on the global stage. He stated, “In America, America is first. In Europe, Europe is first. In China, China is first. We are the only ones who put ourselves last,” urging a shift in mindset to ensure Africa occupies its rightful place in global affairs.

Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell of Grenada lauded Oramah’s visionary leadership. He painted the outgoing president’s tenure as a pivotal moment in strengthening Africa-Caribbean relations, appreciating his strategic foresight. “In the annals of history, you will go down as a pioneer for African people everywhere,” Mitchell proclaimed, announcing a recommendation to bestow upon Oramah the prestigious Order of the Caribbean Community, a fitting tribute to his lasting impact.

As the world watches, the ACTIF2025 forum sets the stage for renewed collaboration, hoping to reignite economic cooperation and cultural ties between Africa and the Caribbean, further cementing a shared future built on mutual growth and understanding.

For those interested in the evolving dynamics of international trade and collaboration, this discourse at ACTIF2025 offers a glimpse into a future where Africa and the Caribbean stand united, charting a course towards prosperity and solidarity.
