Sadiq Khan’s Historic Visit to Nigeria: Strengthening UK-Nigeria Ties in Tech and Creativity

In a groundbreaking move that affirms the long-standing partnership between the UK and Nigeria, London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan wrapped up a successful visit to Lagos focused on enhancing the economic, cultural, and technological ties between the two vibrant cities. Khan’s trip was not only significant as the first official undertaking of its kind by a sitting Mayor of London to sub-Saharan Africa, but it also laid the groundwork for new opportunities in fintech, innovation, and the creative economy.

Accompanied by a delegation of 27 London-based companies specializing in fintech and sustainable technologies, the mayor’s visit highlighted Nigeria’s rising significance as a key player in the UK’s global trade and investment strategy. With collaborative efforts steered by the Mayor’s growth agency, London & Partners, high-level discussions with Nigerian policymakers, investors, and creatives were at the centerpiece, aimed at unlocking new business avenues across Africa.

The visit kicked off with a dynamic panel discussion at the “Bridging Borders: How London and Lagos Can Shape the Future of Global Tech” event. Here, Mayor Khan emphasized the untapped potential for cooperation, urging Nigerian tech entrepreneurs to explore investment opportunities in London. This kind of exchange reiterates the shared ambition of both cities to be at the forefront of global innovation.

The highlight of the trip was the Lagos Canvas Reception, co-hosted by Khan and renowned filmmaker Mo Abudu. This event celebrated Nigeria’s flourishing creative sector and fostered connections between cultural industries in Lagos and London. With contributions from sectors spanning arts, fashion, music, and film, this collaboration is seen as pivotal to the UK-Nigeria Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership (ETIP).

Wrapping up his visit, Khan expressed his excitement for the opportunities Africa holds, as it boasts the world’s fastest-growing populations and economies. His itinerary does not end in Nigeria; he is set to continue his mission with stops in Accra, Johannesburg, and Cape Town, further advocating for London as a hub for investment and cultural exchange.

The British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, underscored that Khan’s visit epitomizes the UK government’s dedication to enhancing ties with Nigeria. “From trade to fintech and fashion, our collaboration is driving innovation and growth,” he remarked.

In his closing statements, Mayor Sadiq Khan stated, “Londoners of African heritage have played an essential role in shaping the city into what it is today. This visit serves as a celebration of our shared history and culture, aiming to foster a better and fairer city for all.”

As the UK and Nigeria forge ahead with strengthened ties, it’s clear that collaborative initiatives in technology and creativity will lay a robust foundation for economic growth and partnership, not just between these two great cities, but also across the entire continent.
