Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara gains renewed international backing.
During a recent United Nations Security Council session, France, the United Kingdom, Bahrain, and Liberia expressed their support for Morocco’s sovereignty and its autonomy plan. This came after the Council decided not to renew the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).
International Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty
France reaffirmed its commitment to Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, with the French Ambassador to the UN stating that the territory’s present and future fall within this framework. He emphasized that Morocco’s autonomy plan is the only viable basis for negotiations aimed at resolving the regional dispute.
The United Kingdom echoed this sentiment, labeling Morocco’s autonomy plan as the most credible and pragmatic foundation for a lasting resolution. The UK Ambassador urged Security Council members to prioritize progress toward a mutually acceptable solution.
Morocco’s Response to the UN Decision
Following the Security Council’s vote, Morocco’s Royal Cabinet hailed the decision as a significant step toward resolving the Sahara issue. They indicated that the non-renewal of MINURSO’s mandate means that the mission’s presence, including personnel and equipment, will conclude shortly.
The Royal Cabinet also noted that the 35-year UN political process regarding the Sahara is now suspended, signaling a shift in how the issue will be addressed in future UN discussions.
Next Steps for Morocco and the Sahara
- MINURSO’s presence in Morocco’s southern provinces will end in the coming days.
- Similar measures regarding the Sahara issue will follow in other UN bodies.
Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara is gaining significant international support.
