Moroccan Agriculture Minister Celebrates Innovation at Marchouch Field Day with ICARDA and INRA

Morocco's Marchouch Research Station Takes Major Strides in Climate-Smart Agriculture

Marchouch, Morocco – May 28, 2025

On an unexpectedly warm spring day that reflects the ongoing challenges posed by climate change, the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) and the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA) came together to host their annual Field Day at the Marchouch Research Station. This event marked a significant gathering for over 350 participants that included farmers, seed producers, government officials, researchers, and students, all united by a shared goal: to adapt Morocco’s agricultural practices to an ever-changing climate.

The collaborative spirit was palpable as H.E. Ahmed El Bouari, the Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, and Water and Forests, joined ICARDA Director General Aly Abousabaa and INRA Director Pr. Lamiae Ghaouti to tour research plots showcasing innovative agricultural practices. This partnership between ICARDA and INRA epitomizes the commitment to develop practical, climate-smart solutions that smallholder farmers in Morocco can depend on.

In her opening speech, Pr. Ghaouti emphasized the importance of fostering connections between researchers and farmers—a crucial step toward accelerated adoption of sustainable agricultural practices. Dr. Michael Baum, ICARDA’s Research Team Leader, shed light on the long-term innovations essential for boosting productivity across Morocco’s five million hectares of rainfed farming.

A highlight of the day was the introduction of over 72 climate-resilient cereal and legume varieties that are tailored to local agro-ecological conditions. Participants explored innovative cropping systems that incorporate direct seeding along with rotations of legumes and forage crops, achieving yields of over 2,000 kg per hectare when supplemented with minimal irrigation.

To address the urgent need for alternative feed production in light of livestock declines due to previous drought conditions, a low-tech vertical hydroponic system was demonstrated. This innovative solution holds promise for scalable fodder production throughout Morocco. Attendees also witnessed the integration of modern machinery into traditional practices, with ICARDA scientists showcasing the use of combine harvesters for lentils—a progressive step towards enhancing mechanization for local farmers.

While one single field day cannot encompass the entire scope of challenges posed by climate change, this event served as a vital platform for dialogue. It united farmers, scientists, and policymakers around common goals. The innovations presented not only reflect a dedication to overcoming climate challenges but also align with Morocco’s aspirations for sustainable agriculture.

Behind all these initiatives, ICARDA emerges as a pivotal player, advancing revolutionary solutions while building resilience in agricultural systems across drylands. As Morocco navigates its agricultural future, collaborations like this one stand as beacons of hope and progress.
