Copper 360: A Rising Star in South Africa's Mining Landscape
In an exciting development for the South African mining sector, Copper 360, a nimble start-up based in the Northern Cape, is making strides in copper production. The company’s CEO, Shirley Hayes, recently expressed her optimism, stating that they have “turned a corner” in their operations as they work diligently to meet their production targets.
Speaking to Africazine, Hayes emphasized her commitment to ramping up efficiency, particularly following the successful commissioning of their Rietberg project. “Our priority now is to increase production efficiently,” she noted, setting a clear vision for the company’s immediate future.
Copper 360 has ambitious plans to reach a steady-state production target of 40,000 tons per month this year, with expectations to double that figure over the next two years. This is a notable goal, especially considering that the company’s mining rights encompass a significant 19,000 hectares located north of Springbok, housing 12 copper mines, many equipped with developed infrastructure.
Launched in 2023, the company made a smart move by first focusing on processing historical waste from legacy mines like O’kiep, utilizing a solvent extraction-electrowinning plant to produce copper cathode. “This recycling approach has not only provided us with early cash flow but also served as a solid foundation for future growth,” Hayes explained.
Copper 360 aims to achieve break-even status by 2025, a target that speaks volumes about their strong financial management strategy. “Cost control is key,” Hayes emphasized, pointing out that they are actively optimizing resources and streamlining processes to improve profit margins. Furthermore, she is advocating for a cluster mining model, which could see more of their nearby prospects like Jubilee and Homeep-East come online. This strategy is designed to diversify copper output and minimize operational risks.
It’s worth noting that Hayes’ journey with Copper 360 reflects resilience and innovation; after being retrenched from her previous role at a granite quarry, she took on the mantle of leadership first as the group’s chair in May 2024 and then as CEO in December.
As Copper 360 forges ahead, it’s clear that they are not just mining for copper—they are mining for long-term success, setting an example of innovation and strategic planning in the resource-rich landscape of South Africa. Keep an eye on this rising star; with their strategic vision and commitment to efficiency, Copper 360 may well transform the mining industry.
