“King Letsie of Lesotho Expresses Regret for Missing Celebrated Kuomboka Ceremony”

King Letsie III of Lesotho Thanks President Hakainde Hichilema for Kuomboka Invitation

In a heartfelt letter dated March 21, 2025, King Letsie III of Lesotho expressed his gratitude to President Hakainde Hichilema for the kind invitation to attend the Kuomboka Ceremony of the Lozi people in Mongu, Western Province. This annual event, rich in cultural significance, showcases the vibrant traditions and heritage of the Lozi community and serves as a celebration of their identity and history. The invitation was extended on behalf of the Litunga, the traditional leader of the Lozi people, marking an important moment in cross-cultural engagement and connection.

King Letsie shared his desire to experience this remarkable tradition, noting that the opportunity to visit the Western Province and participate in such an iconic event has long been on his wish list. During a prior meeting with President Hichilema in Dar es Salaam earlier this year, both leaders reflected on the importance of strengthening cultural ties across southern Africa.

Despite his enthusiasm, King Letsie regrettably informed the President that he would be unable to attend this year’s festivities due to prior work commitments that could not be rescheduled. In his letter, he requested President Hichilema convey his sincerest apologies to the Litunga and the people of Western Province for missing this significant occasion.

Looking to the future, King Letsie expressed hope that he would have another opportunity to participate in the Kuomboka Ceremony, reinforcing his commitment to fostering cultural ties between the Basotho of Lesotho and the MaLozi-speaking communities in Zambia. This vision of unity and shared heritage is a beautiful reminder of the importance of cultural exchange in strengthening relationships among African nations.

As King Letsie III continues to inspire with his diplomatic outreach, this invitation serves not only as a gesture of goodwill but also as a beacon of hope for deeper cultural connections and mutual respect among the diverse peoples of Africa.
