In a significant move aimed at enhancing community involvement in mining operations, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Mining and Blue Economy, Ali Hassan Joho, has recently appointed new members to two Community Development Agreement Committees. This initiative involves both the Kipkorgot Community in Uasin Gishu County and the Bathi Community in Kiambu County, ensuring that locals have a voice in the development of resources in their areas.
The establishment of these committees is a vital step in aligning mining operations with community development, reinforcing the concept that resource extraction should benefit the local population. As per a gazette notice dated February 21, 2023, the members of the committees will serve for a term of three years, engaging in discussions that are vital for sustainable development and local welfare. Joho’s commitment to facilitating this partnership underlines the government’s dedication to responsible mining practices, which can drive economic growth while ensuring that local communities are prioritized.
In Kiambu County, vital appointments to the Committee include Irene Kurgat, Anthony Karago Mburu, Isaiah Murithi Mutiiria, Robert Kiplangat Kosgei, David Kimani Kuria, Eliud N. Ndichu, Stephen Nyutu Wamwere, Serah Njeri Karanja, and Patrick Njenga Wamwaki. These individuals are tasked not only with overseeing mining operations but also with fostering development projects that will enhance the lives of community members.
In a complementary area, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has also made strides in the educational sector by appointing Prof. Geoffrey Wahungu as the Chairperson of the Nyandarua National Polytechnic Council. Wahungu’s leadership is expected to promote technical education and vocational training, key areas for empowering the youth and equipping them with relevant skills for today’s job market. Ogamba also appointed Paul Lilan as the Chairperson of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority, further strengthening the country’s commitment to enhancing educational standards.
This series of appointments showcases the Kenyan government’s proactive approach to integrating community needs into economic development plans, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between local populations and industry stakeholders. Such initiatives pave the way for more inclusive growth, ensuring that as the nation advances in various sectors, no community is left behind.
