Lagos Set to Launch Africa’s Biggest Psychiatric Center by 2025!

Lagos State is making significant strides towards improving mental healthcare with the ambitious development of the Lagos State Mental Institute, a cutting-edge facility located in Ketu-Ejirin, Epe, that is expected to open its doors by 2025. This exciting initiative, introduced by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, aims to be the largest psychiatric and rehabilitation center in sub-Saharan Africa, boasting a 500-bed capacity and representing a robust commitment to comprehensive healthcare delivery.

During a recent site visit, Governor Sanwo-Olu, accompanied by Health Commissioner Prof. Akin Abayomi and Special Adviser for Works Engr. Adekunle Olayinka, provided an overview of the project’s current status and future prospects. He announced that the first phase of construction is already 50% complete, featuring state-of-the-art facilities, including consultation rooms, dormitories, dining halls, kitchens, staff quarters, and recreational spaces, all nestled within a tranquil 25-hectare environment.

“This will be an end-to-end psychiatric center, ensuring that patients receive psychotherapy and psycho-rehabilitation in a first-class environment,” Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized. The facility is intentionally designed as a bungalow complex, which caters to the specialized needs of mental health patients, aligning with international best practices for psychiatric rehabilitation. Once open, the institute will set a new standard for mental healthcare across the region.

The second phase of the project promises to enhance the institute’s capacity even further by introducing additional accommodations and rehabilitation facilities, with Governor Sanwo-Olu asserting, “Mental health challenges deserve top-tier solutions, and we are committed to making this facility a classic case of excellence.” He expressed gratitude towards the contractors, Messrs Formwork Limited, praising their dedication and efficiency as the project continues to move forward, with landscaping and equipment installation slated to commence shortly.

This remarkable development forms a vital part of the Lagos State Government’s larger strategy to tackle the increasing mental health challenges facing its populace while ensuring a holistic approach to health service delivery. Furthermore, the institute’s strategic location near the Food and Logistics Hub demonstrates the government’s intent to integrate mental health services into its overarching development framework.

With such significant progress in mental healthcare infrastructure, Governor Sanwo-Olu is confident that by this time next year, the Lagos State Mental Institute will serve as a beacon of hope for individuals seeking mental health support, reflecting the state’s commitment to delivering quality healthcare. Indeed, the advancements being made in Lagos set an inspiring example of healthcare innovation that could serve as a model for other regions across sub-Saharan Africa.
