Ayakha Godlwana’s bravery has sparked a community outpouring of support in Durban.
A BackaBuddy campaign has raised R61,000 in just three days for Godlwana, who heroically rescued 74-year-old Doddy Teranes from a fire at the Delphi Greek Taverna. The incident occurred on September 3, 2026, and has since captured the attention of social media and local news.
Local Hero Rescues Woman from Fire
Ayakha Godlwana, a chef at a nearby coffee shop, acted swiftly when he learned of the fire. He was alerted by fellow employees and rushed to the scene, where he found Emanuel and Maria Teranes in distress over their sister’s safety. Godlwana took immediate action, using a garden hose handed to him by Emanuel to combat the flames.
Despite the thick smoke, Godlwana managed to reach Doddy’s room. He sprayed water on the ceiling to help her navigate her way out. Once she was on his back, he carried her down the stairs to safety.
Community Rallying Behind Godlwana
The fundraising initiative, created by Zane Groenewald, has seen contributions from approximately 171 donors. Groenewald expressed hope that the campaign would allow the community to celebrate Godlwana’s heroic actions. He emphasized the importance of recognizing such bravery in times of crisis.
Godlwana received a hero’s award from the KwaZulu-Natal International Business Association, highlighting the impact of his actions. The Teranes family, however, faces challenges as they lost all their possessions in the fire, including historical documents and photographs.
