China’s Cross-Border Interbank Payment System (CIPS) has expanded its global network by welcoming 11 new foreign banks.

This expansion includes banks from six new countries, such as Rwanda, Türkiye, and Uzbekistan. The signing ceremony occurred during the 26th China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT), which attracted delegations from 129 countries and regions.

CIPS Expands Global Reach with New Banks

The inclusion of 11 foreign banks as direct participants in CIPS enhances its operational capacity. This payment system now has direct participants in 133 countries and regions, with its services covering 192 countries and regions. CIPS provides essential clearing and settlement services for cross-border RMB payments and trade.

Mziwandile Mavuso from South Africa’s FirstRand Bank emphasized that direct participation simplifies RMB payments for clients. The system allows banks to offer faster and more transparent services while reducing reliance on multiple intermediaries.

Key Developments at CIFIT

The CIFIT event not only facilitated the signing of new agreements but also marked the launch of CIPS’s cross-border letter of guarantee service. This service standardizes messaging for guarantee arrangements, benefiting lenders and corporate clients alike. CIFIT has become a crucial platform for enhancing investment and global development since its inception in 1997.

Next Steps for CIPS and Global Banking

  • Further expansion of CIPS’s network of direct participants.
  • Continued development of RMB applications in international payments.
  • Potential future collaborations with additional foreign banks.

CIPS's expansion signifies a pivotal moment for international banking and trade.
