The Long Thanh International Airport project is set to transform transportation in southern Vietnam.
The new Provincial Road 770B and upgrades to roads 773 and 769 span approximately 111 km. The project, with a total cost of around VND336.63 trillion (.8 billion), aims to alleviate congestion at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat airport and is expected to handle 25 million passengers annually in its first phase.
Long Thanh Airport’s Infrastructure Development
The Provincial Road 769 connects National Highway 1 at the Dau Giay junction with National Highway 51 at the Loc An junction. This 29 km route will feature at least six lanes for cars and a roadbed width ranging from 30.5 to 45 m, costing nearly VND2.8 trillion (6 million). The road will also include an overpass over the North-South railway, expanding to 43.5 m with service roads for local residents.
Provincial Road 770B, the largest of the three, is being constructed from scratch at a cost exceeding VND4.7 trillion (9 million). This nearly 43 km road will accommodate six lanes for cars, two mixed-traffic lanes, and a 9.5 m central median, facilitating connections between Dong Nai City and various industrial parks.
Investment and Economic Implications
The government emphasizes the importance of these roads in forming a synchronized transport system. This system will support both passenger and freight transport once the airport becomes operational. The roads are designed to enhance connectivity between industrial zones, logistics centers, seaports, and the airport, which is crucial for attracting investment in manufacturing and higher-value services.
Next Steps for Long Thanh Project
- Complete the first phase of the airport by the end of 2026.
- Begin commercial flights following the completion of the first phase.
- Finish land clearance and planning for the road projects.
The Long Thanh International Airport project is a pivotal step for Vietnam’s transportation future.
