Siemens showcases Africa’s green energy potential with a new documentary.
The 11-minute film highlights the off-grid green hydrogen plant at Walvis Bay’s CMB.Tech industrial hub, which has garnered over 2.7 million views since its release on August 7. Siemens’ CEO for sub-Saharan Africa emphasized that this facility represents a significant step in large-scale clean energy production.
Inside Africa’s First Green Hydrogen Facility
The documentary provides an in-depth look at the innovative processes at the CMB.Tech facility. Located just outside Walvis Bay, this plant is powered by a 5 MW solar installation and a 5 MW battery storage system. This setup fuels an electrolyser that produces green hydrogen, marking a pivotal advancement in clean energy technology.
Roy Campe, CTO of CMB.Tech, has indicated plans for significant expansion of the facility. This expansion aligns with the company’s strategy to develop a refuelling option for its fleet, which is being retrofitted with dual-fuel technologies.

Siemens has played a crucial role in the development of this facility by supplying essential technologies. These include a digital twin and automation infrastructure, which allow for nearly 80% of the plant’s processes to operate automatically. This level of automation enhances efficiency and supports the plant’s ambitious production goals.
