Burundi is advancing its healthcare management through digital innovation.
The government is set to expand its digital health supply chain management system, eLMIS Medexis, to private healthcare facilities after successfully deploying it across public and faith-based institutions. This initiative aims to enhance medicine availability and improve health logistics.
Burundi Expands Digital Health System to Private Sector
Burundi’s Public Health Minister Fidele Ndayisaba and Alain Parfait Bimenyimana from i+Solutions recently reviewed the progress of the eLMIS Medexis initiative. Launched in December 2022, the platform has already been implemented in all public and faith-based healthcare facilities, training over 2,000 users and connecting 956 health facilities.
The eLMIS Medexis system allows health authorities to manage inventories of medicines digitally, enabling quicker responses to shortages. To facilitate this rollout, 839 laptops and 148 routers have been distributed to enhance digital access and strengthen inventory management.

Next Steps for Digital Health Expansion
The next phase will focus on extending the eLMIS Medexis platform to private health facilities. Authorities will also enhance technical support, improve digital infrastructure, and explore solutions for areas with limited connectivity, including satellite internet services like Starlink. Additionally, improving interoperability between health information systems will be prioritized as digital health services grow.
Burundi’s Vision for Integrated Health Supply Network
By expanding the system beyond government facilities, Burundi aims to create a more integrated national health supply network that encompasses both public and private providers. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernize healthcare management and ensure reliable access to essential medicines.
