Malawi is set to lead an innovative AI initiative aimed at enhancing access to information in local languages.
The World Bank, with support from the Gates Foundation, has selected Malawi to pilot a project that will train AI models to understand and communicate in Chichewa. This initiative aims to bridge the language gap for millions of Malawians who primarily use local languages, particularly benefiting rural populations.
World Bank Launches AI Initiative in Malawi
The World Bank’s Development Data programme manager, Holly Krambeck, announced the initiative during a workshop in Lilongwe. The project aims to close the language gap that limits access to information. Malawi was chosen due to its ongoing efforts to build language resources necessary for developing AI systems tailored to local needs.
As part of the initiative, approximately 7,000 hours of Chichewa audio recordings have been collected from local radio programmes. This data will be instrumental in training AI to understand and respond to users in their native language, enhancing digital communication for Chichewa speakers.
