Morocco is making significant strides in rail expansion through a partnership with South Korean firms.

The National Railways Office (ONCF) has signed agreements with Hyundai Rotem and KORAIL to enhance rail services in the Casablanca region. The contract with Hyundai Rotem is valued at 748.2 billion won, approximately 7 million, as part of a broader initiative to acquire 110 double-decker trains.

Morocco’s Ambitious Rail Expansion Plans

The agreements with South Korean firms are pivotal for Morocco’s Vision 2040, which aims to transform the country’s rail infrastructure. Hyundai Rotem will provide maintenance services for a 20-year period, while KORAIL will focus on quality control and knowledge transfer. This collaboration is expected to significantly improve transport efficiency across the Casablanca metropolitan area.

The new double-decker trains will operate at speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour, enhancing connectivity and reducing travel times for commuters. This initiative is part of a larger investment strategy, with 96 billion dirhams, or about .3 billion, earmarked for mobility infrastructure across the nation.

Future Developments in Casablanca’s Rail Network

As part of the Vision 2040 initiative, Morocco plans to build the Casablanca South Station, which will accommodate up to 12 million passengers annually. This station will serve as a major intermodal hub, linking various transport services including high-speed rail, regional services, and an airport express to Mohammed V Airport.

Additionally, two next-generation stations are planned: one in Benslimane and another at Casablanca Airport. By 2040, the rail network aims to expand from 23 to 43 cities, increasing population access from 51% to 87% and connecting 12 international airports and 12 ports.

Next Steps for Morocco’s Rail Initiative

  • Completion of agreements with Hyundai Rotem and KORAIL.
  • Acquisition of 110 double-decker trains.
  • Construction of Casablanca South Station.
  • Development of additional stations in Benslimane and at Casablanca Airport.

Morocco is poised to revolutionize its rail network, enhancing connectivity and accessibility for millions.
