Africazine:

Eskom is advancing its gas-to-power strategy with a new LNG import facility in Richards Bay.

The heads of agreement with Zululand Energy Terminal aims to establish a facility capable of supplying 3,000MW of gas-to-power capacity. This initiative is a key component of South Africa’s Integrated Resource Plan 2025, which seeks to diversify the energy mix and enhance energy security.

Eskom’s LNG Import Facility Plans Unveiled

The agreement outlines the development of an LNG import facility at the Port of Richards Bay. This facility will import, store, and regasify liquefied natural gas for electricity generation and industrial use. Eskom is set to be the major long-term buyer, ensuring the project’s viability by providing initial demand.

The facility is designed to support Eskom’s planned gas-fired power station in the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone. This plant will primarily utilize imported LNG as its fuel source, aligning with the country’s broader energy diversification goals.

Key Aspects of South Africa’s Energy Strategy

South Africa’s Integrated Resource Plan 2025 aims for 6,000MW of gas-to-power capacity by 2030, with allocations for both Eskom and independent power producers. The planned LNG import facility is part of Eskom’s contribution to the 3,000MW specifically designated for the utility.

As domestic gas supplies dwindle and new regional sources remain uncertain, the country is increasingly looking to LNG imports as a solution. However, imported LNG is generally more expensive due to the costs associated with liquefaction, shipping, and regasification.

Next Steps for the LNG Project

  • Detailed negotiations on pricing and supply volumes are ongoing.
  • Financing arrangements will be established to support the project.
  • Timelines for the development of the LNG import facility will be clarified.

The establishment of the LNG import facility marks a significant step in South Africa’s energy transition strategy.
