Tiger Brands Signs Renewable Energy Agreement to Reduce Carbon Emissions

Tiger Brands is taking a significant step towards sustainability with a new renewable energy agreement.

The company has signed a landmark electricity wheeling agreement with Apollo Africa, set to start in 2028. This initiative will allow Tiger Brands to source renewable energy from off-site facilities and transmit it through South Africa’s national electricity grid to its Gauteng manufacturing sites.

Tiger Brands Partners for Cleaner Manufacturing

This agreement marks a pivotal move in Tiger Brands’ transition to cleaner energy sources. By utilizing renewable energy generated from solar and wind farms, the company aims to reduce its carbon footprint while enhancing operational efficiency. Chief Manufacturing Officer Praveen Balgobind emphasized that this initiative aligns with their sustainability strategy, which seeks to deliver affordable nutrition while minimizing environmental impact.

By 2028, facilities connected to the Ekurhuleni Municipality network are projected to receive around 60% of their electricity from wheeled renewable energy. This shift not only supports Tiger Brands’ commitment to sustainability but also reflects a growing trend among South African manufacturers to adopt renewable energy solutions.

South Africa: Key figures on Renewable Energy Agreement

  • 60% of electricity from wheeled renewable energy by 2028
  • Reducing water and energy intensity by 30%
  • Reducing carbon emissions by 30%
  • Achieving 31% renewable electrical energy usage
  • Reaching zero waste to landfill across all sites
  • Reducing production food waste by 50%
  • Ensuring 80% of plastic packaging is recyclable or compostable
  • Including 25% recycled content in PET packaging

Commitment to Environmental Stewardship

The partnership with Apollo Africa is a strategic move that underscores Tiger Brands’ commitment to its 2030 Environmental Stewardship targets. These targets include significant reductions in both water and energy intensity, as well as ambitious goals for waste management and packaging sustainability. Apollo Africa CEO Nico de Bruyn highlighted the effectiveness of wheeling as a renewable energy solution, showcasing how it can bolster industrial growth while enhancing sustainability.

Next Steps for Tiger Brands

  • Implementation of the wheeling agreement in 2028
  • Continuous monitoring of sustainability targets through 2030
  • Further partnerships to enhance renewable energy usage

Tiger Brands is leading the charge towards sustainable manufacturing in South Africa.
