Africazine:

Zimbabwe has made a significant leap in lithium production by exporting Africa’s first lithium sulphate.

The US0 million Arcadia Technology plant, owned by Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt’s Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe, dispatched its first shipment this week. This marks a pivotal shift for Zimbabwe, moving from exporting raw concentrate to producing a higher-value battery material.

Zimbabwe’s First Lithium Sulphate Shipment

The inaugural shipment from the Arcadia plant is a landmark achievement for Zimbabwe and the African continent. This facility is designed to produce approximately 80,000 metric tonnes of lithium sulphate annually, a crucial precursor for lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles and energy storage systems.

Henry Zhu, the general manager of Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe, emphasized that this shipment is more than just a commercial transaction; it showcases Zimbabwe’s innovation and Africa’s expanding role in the global energy transition.

Impact of Local Processing Policies

The Zimbabwean government has prioritized local processing in its mining policy, suspending all raw lithium concentrate exports as of February 25, 2026. This decision accelerates a deadline initially set for 2027, compelling producers to establish processing facilities.

Arcadia is the first company to transition from concentrate to chemical conversion, significantly increasing the value of lithium exports per tonne. This aligns with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s vision of transforming Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy by 2030.

Next Steps for Zimbabwe’s Lithium Sector

  • Huayou expects full production from the Arcadia plant later this year.
  • The government plans to “softly lift” the export ban for compliant producers.
  • Arcadia is positioned for quota allocations as it meets processing requirements.

This milestone positions Zimbabwe as a key player in the global lithium market.
