Africazine:

The race for the next UN Secretary-General is heating up as candidates prepare for public presentations.

The deadline for nominations set by General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock has passed, but candidates can still enter the race. Those who submitted their candidacies will participate in an interactive dialogue starting April 20, where they will present their vision for the UN and answer questions from member states and civil society representatives.

New Selection Process for UN Secretary-General

This year marks a shift towards transparency in the selection of the UN Secretary-General. For the first time, candidates will publicly present their visions, a practice initiated in 2016. Each candidate will have ten minutes to outline their goals, followed by a Q&A session.

Despite these changes, the Security Council retains significant power in the selection process. The fifteen member states will vote secretly to gauge support for candidates, with the final nominee requiring at least nine votes, avoiding any veto from permanent members.

Current Candidates and Their Backgrounds

Four official candidates have emerged, with a notable focus on Latin America. Michelle Bachelet, the former President of Chile, is a frontrunner despite her country’s withdrawal of support. Rafael Grossi, the Director-General of the IAEA, and Rebeca Grynspan, the current Secretary-General of UNCTAD, are also in the running.

Interestingly, Macky Sall, the former President of Senegal, represents Africa in this race, having been nominated by Burundi. His candidacy has sparked discussions about the representation of African nations in global leadership roles.

Upcoming Presentations and Voting Timeline

  • Interactive dialogues for candidates will begin on April 20.
  • The Security Council is expected to start the selection process by the end of July.

The selection of the next UN Secretary-General is a pivotal moment for global governance and representation.
