Durban University of Technology Hosts Translingual Symposium on Inclusive Education

The Durban University of Technology is leading the charge in multilingual education through its recent Translingual Symposium.

This event gathered academics and researchers to discuss the integration of translanguaging and inclusive pedagogies in higher education. It aimed to enhance teaching practices that support diverse linguistic backgrounds, aligning with the university’s ENVISION2030 strategy.

Translingual Symposium Promotes Inclusive Education

The Faculty of Health Sciences hosted the symposium at Mansfield Hall, emphasizing the importance of multilingualism in education. Dr Khosi Mpofana opened the event, highlighting how translingual practices align with DUT’s commitment to transformation and student-centered learning.

Participants engaged in discussions on embedding translingual principles in curriculum design and teaching methods. The symposium coincided with Mother Tongue Month, reinforcing the need to embrace multilingual realities in South African universities.

DUT’s Commitment to Multilingualism in Academia

Professor Pavitra Pillay framed translingualism as a strategic priority for the university. She emphasized that multilingualism enriches academic engagement and patient care, urging a rethinking of traditional teaching methods.

The keynote address by Ms Nobuhle Luphondo underscored the value of integrating students’ languages into the learning environment, fostering deeper understanding and participation.

Next Steps for Multilingual Education at DUT

  • Establish a community of practice among lecturers.
  • Document experiences and share strategies for inclusive teaching.
