Africazine:
Electricity consumption in Egypt has surged as Ramadan progresses, reaching critical levels.
On the third day of Ramadan, electricity demand hit approximately 31,000 megawatts (MW), an increase of nearly 1,500 MW from the previous day. This rise reflects the heightened household and commercial activity typical of the holy month, particularly during evening gatherings and preparations for iftar.
Ramadan Boosts Electricity Demand in Egypt
The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy reported that Saturday’s load exceeded the roughly 29,500 MW recorded on the second day of Ramadan. This seasonal surge is attributed to increased energy use during the evening hours, as families and businesses adjust their routines for the holy month.
Officials noted that the rise in consumption is expected to continue as Ramadan progresses, particularly towards the middle of the month. The ministry is closely monitoring load patterns to maintain the stability of Egypt’s unified electricity network and prevent outages.
Strategies for Managing Increased Load
To address the rising demand, the ministry is implementing strategies to maximize output from renewable energy projects and recently connected generation capacity. Reducing technical losses across the transmission network is also a priority.
Coordination with power generation companies is ongoing to ensure adequate reserve margins during peak demand periods. Public awareness campaigns are being conducted to encourage rationalized electricity consumption and improved energy efficiency throughout Ramadan.
Next Steps for Electricity Management
- Continue monitoring load patterns to prevent outages.
- Maximize output from renewable energy projects.
- Reduce technical losses in the transmission network.
- Conduct public awareness campaigns on energy efficiency.
Egypt is actively managing a significant surge in electricity demand during Ramadan.
