O.R. Tambo International Airport is undergoing a significant transformation to enhance passenger experience.

The airport has launched a R14.5 billion five-year Capital Expenditure initiative aimed at modernizing its infrastructure. This includes upgrades to restroom facilities and improvements to passenger areas, ensuring a more reliable and enjoyable travel experience.

The R14.5 billion initiative focuses on essential infrastructure improvements at O.R. Tambo International Airport. Key upgrades include enhanced escalators, travelators, ergonomic seating, and improved wayfinding signage. Durable tiling is replacing carpets at all international boarding gates, contributing to a cleaner environment.

In response to passenger feedback, the airport is fast-tracking a refurbishment of restroom facilities. New facilities have been opened on the Ground Floor (Domestic Arrivals) and Domestic Departures, featuring premium finishes that prioritize hygiene and comfort.

Future Phases and Ongoing Improvements

Phase 1 of the restroom refurbishment project commenced on 1 June 2025 and is on track for completion by the end of March 2026. Following this, Phase 2 will focus on an additional 780 toilets, starting in July 2026. The airport aims to ensure minimal disruption during these upgrades.
