Recent gatherings in Algeria and Türkiye have spotlighted advancements in managing cereal pests and enhancing wheat breeding.

Researchers and policymakers from the Arab world, Central and West Asia, and North Africa convened under the CLIMARES project, part of the Bilateral Funding Scheme-5 initiative. Key discussions focused on sustainable cereal production, with over 450 participants attending the 14th Arab Congress of Plant Protection.

Advancements in Cereal Nematode Management

The 14th Arab Congress of Plant Protection featured a session on managing cereal nematodes, drawing significant interest. Led by Professor Amer Dababat, the session highlighted the importance of nematode management for sustainable cereal production.

Five scientific presentations showcased recent research, including advancements in molecular diagnostics and the development of nematode-resistant cereal varieties. The discussions underscored the need for improved diagnostic capacity and integrated management practices.

Algeria: Key figures on wheat breeding

  • More than 450 participants attended the Congress
  • Over 80 bread wheat varieties of ICARDA origin released in CWANA and Sub-Saharan Africa
  • 145 winter wheat varieties registered across the Balkan and CWANA regions

Strengthening Regional Collaboration and Capacity

Alongside the Congress, a capacity-building workshop focused on the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. This workshop brought together 25 participants from various regions, emphasizing practical outcomes from Treaty commitments.

Key sessions addressed the role of the Treaty in climate change adaptation and food security, as well as integrating Access and Benefit-Sharing mechanisms into policies. Participants identified pathways to enhance agrobiodiversity conservation.

Next Steps in Wheat Improvement

  • Continue strengthening professional networks across regions
  • Implement integrated management practices through farmer engagement
