Botswana is taking significant steps to address its nutrition challenges through enhanced media engagement.

At a recent training session in Gaborone, journalists learned how to effectively report on nutrition issues, emphasizing the intersection of food systems, health, and development. The event was part of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) initiative, which Botswana joined in 2015, aiming to combat malnutrition in all its forms.

Journalists Trained on Nutrition Reporting in Botswana

The Ministry of Lands and Agriculture hosted a media training focused on nutrition reporting. Nutritionist Mr. Baeng Ntime highlighted the importance of accurate reporting, stating that nutrition is central to national development. He emphasized that everyone has the right to food and good nutrition, aligning with the global Scaling Up Nutrition Movement.

Participants discussed the complexities of malnutrition, which includes issues like childhood undernutrition and diet-related diseases. Mr. Ntime pointed out that informed reporting is essential to tackle these challenges effectively.

Botswana’s Commitment to Nutrition Integration

Mr. Ntime noted that Botswana is integrating nutrition into its agriculture and food systems policies. This initiative aligns with Vision 2036 and the Botswana Economic Transformation Plan, showcasing political commitment to addressing nutrition as a development priority.

Food Bank Botswana’s country director, Mr. Kingston Mmolawa, echoed these sentiments, stressing that despite improvements in food availability, persistent nutrition challenges remain. He emphasized that food systems significantly influence health outcomes.
