Zambia Set to Launch Digital IDs by 2026: A Step Towards Inclusivity and Innovation
Zambia is poised to introduce its much-anticipated Digital Identification Cards by the end of 2026, marking a significant leap forward in the country’s digital transformation. This initiative, championed by the Smart Zambia Institute and part of the larger Digital Zambia Acceleration Project (DZAP), is backed by an impressive grant of 0 million from the International Development Association, a member of the World Bank Group.
The DZAP aims to bridge the digital divide and enhance access to internet services and digitally enabled public services across the nation. Percy Chinyama, the National Coordinator of the Smart Zambia Institute, emphasized that this project will particularly focus on ensuring digital inclusion for women, girls, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups. This commitment reflects Zambia’s dedication to not only advancing technology but also prioritizing equitable access for all its citizens.
As part of the Inclusive Digitalisation in Eastern and Southern Africa Programme, the Digital Zambia Acceleration Project is set to boost Zambia’s e-government services, enhancing the efficiency, transparency, and security of public service delivery. This initiative signifies a profound shift towards a modernized governance framework that aligns with global best practices and responds to the needs of its citizens.
Chinyama shared insights during engagements in Washington D.C., where he highlighted Zambia’s progress in expanding digital services. These developments are not just about technology; they represent a vision for a more inclusive society where everyone can participate in and benefit from digital advancement.
Furthermore, with a growing emphasis on transparency and security in public service delivery, the digital ID cards are expected to streamline processes, making it easier for Zambians to access services and participate in governance.
In a rapidly evolving digital landscape, Zambia is positioning itself as a leader in digital inclusivity, leveraging international partnerships to foster innovation and growth. As the nation steps towards a digital future, it remains committed to ensuring that every citizen has the right tools and resources to thrive.
