Beit Tulun Reopens as a Vibrant Cultural Hub in Old Cairo

This historic house, nestled conveniently near the illustrious Ibn Tulun Mosque, is set to breathe new life into the area, thanks to the efforts of D-CAF, Egypt’s premier multidisciplinary arts festival. The grand reopening coincided with an exceptional exhibition by acclaimed Egyptian-Canadian ceramicist Basma Osama, marking her first showcase in the Arab world.
After years of restoration, Beit Tulun stands as a testament to the beauty of Cairo’s bygone era. Years ago, it lay shrouded under more than 40 tonnes of refuse, but with the dedication and vision of architect Dr. Mona Zakaria, it has been transformed into an inviting cultural venue. Zakaria first uncovered the house in 1998 and immediately recognized its potential. Remarkably, she has used the building as her architectural office for over two decades, cherishing its unique features such as walls insulated with braided palm leaves. It was an emotional journey for her as locals shared that the house had “been waiting for her” since its last owners departed in 1954.
The reopening coincides with the exhibition ‘Reminiscence: From Memory to Matter,’ running from October 4th to 26th, which explores Egypt’s mineral landscapes as well as Osama’s own journey across three decades abroad. Utilizing the ancient coiling technique, her ceramics beautifully meld memories and nature, showcasing pieces meticulously crafted over the past year specifically for Beit Tulun. “I don’t know if I chose Beit Tulun or if it chose me,” Osama reflected. “From the moment we walked in, it felt like home.”
