Countdown to Change: Only Five Years Remain to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals—Bold Action is Essential!

In a significant gathering aimed at tackling some of the world’s most pressing challenges, Ambassador Paruyr Hovhannisyan, Vice-President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), co-chaired the annual joint meeting of the UNGA80 Second Committee and ECOSOC, partnering with Ambassador Lamin Dibba from The Gambia. This event reflected a growing recognition that our global approach to sustainable development needs a major overhaul.

The discussions at this year’s joint meeting shone a light on the urgent necessity for a more integrated, systemic method for financing sustainable development goals. Rather than relying on fragmented, project-based funding, stakeholders emphasized the importance of a collaborative framework that leverages public, private, concessional, and philanthropic resources. This shift is essential as we race against the clock—just five short years remain to make significant progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Ambassador Hovhannisyan articulated a powerful message: merely making incremental changes won’t cut it. The ambassador underscored the need to rethink partnerships across the board, whether they be public-private alliances or multilateral cooperation. Such reimagined collaborations can unlock substantial benefits for both people and the planet, paving the way for a brighter future.

The participants at the meeting shared compelling examples highlighting how inclusive, gender-responsive, and locally driven solutions are essential to drive transformations in various sectors, especially food systems and sustainable livelihoods. These dialogues also opened doors for innovative thinking around aligning public budgets, private investments, and multilateral support. The collective aim is to facilitate large-scale societal transitions that leave no one behind.

Moreover, the meeting served as a reaffirmation of ECOSOC and the Second Committee’s commitment to enhance cooperative efforts and foster coordinated actions necessary for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This renewed dedication is more than just a promise—it’s a vital step toward ensuring that every community around the globe can thrive in harmony with its environment.

As we inch closer to the deadline for achieving the SDGs, it’s crucial that we continue to foster these discussions on collaborative financing and transformative partnerships. Only through a shared commitment can we hope to see significant, lasting change across Africa and beyond.
