“Have You Discovered a Painted Rock? It Might Be a Special Gift Just for You!”

In a charming story of community spirit and creativity, Lynn Kelly, a passionate retiree from Moncton, New Brunswick, is transforming her free time into a delightful hobby that brings joy to others. This Thanksgiving, instead of the traditional turkey and pumpkin pie, Kelly embraced her artistic side by taking to the picturesque Centennial Park, where she secretly hid vibrantly painted Halloween-themed rocks. With each carefully placed rock, Kelly hopes to spark smiles and laughter among park visitors.

“I love the thrill of the hunt,” she shared with Africazine, reflecting on her delightful festive activity. Within moments, one of her painted creations disappeared, and she relished the mystery of its new home. “Not everyone will tell you they’ve found one; some keep them, while others choose to re-hide them,” she added with a cheeky grin.

Kelly is a proud member of a local Facebook group called Happiness Rocks Moncton, a community boasting nearly 5,000 members dedicated to spreading smiles through colored rocks. The initiative, which began back in 2017, encourages individuals of all ages to paint and hide rocks throughout the region for the sheer joy of discovery and connection.

Tracey Vail, co-founder of the group, highlighted the group’s ethos of generosity and positivity. “It’s incredible to read stories from members who found a rock on a bad day and watched their frowns turn into smiles,” she expressed. Vail explained that the group not only creates a sense of joy but also promotes creativity, showcasing the talents of local artists.

One particularly heartwarming anecdote featured a rock that traveled back to France with a member, while another found its way home with a visitor from Morocco. The sense of community and joy created through these simple acts of kindness resonates well beyond Moncton.

Not only is Kelly finding joy in her creativity, but she is also sharing this passion with her family. Her three-year-old grandson, Arlo, has started to join her painting rocks for residents in local nursing homes, fostering connections that bridge generations. Their family project showcases the power of art in nurturing relationships and improving mental well-being.

In a delightful twist, Kelly recently contributed to a local initiative inspired by a young boy named Liam, who built a colorful rock snake in his yard. To everyone’s surprise, what began with just six rocks quickly expanded to 153! It illustrates perfectly that when creativity meets a sense of community, wonderful things can happen.

From the sun-soaked parks of Moncton to the bustling streets of international cities, the simple act of painting rocks has garnered a following that transcends borders. Kelly’s initiative serves as a beautiful reminder that magic can be found in ordinary places, and that a little creativity can launch waves of happiness across a community.

So, whether you’re anywhere in Canada or beyond, remember that a small painted rock can brighten someone’s day and enforce a unique connection. Next time you’re out and about, keep your eyes peeled because you never know what little piece of happiness you might uncover!
