“2026 Budget Proposal: Bulawayo’s Rate Freeze Focuses on Water and Sanitation Priorities”

Bulawayo City Council Unveils Ambitious Budget for 2026

In an encouraging move, the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) has introduced a standstill budget for the 2026 financial year, reaffirming its commitment to support residents by maintaining current rates and rental costs. This proposal, totaling an impressive US4.7 million, is crafted to alleviate the financial pressures faced by both households and businesses while addressing the critical service delivery needs of the city.

A significant portion, amounting to US7.5 million, is earmarked for recurrent expenses, while US.2 million will be invested in ambitious capital projects. Notably, the budget dedicates nearly a third of its resources—US.3 million—to enhancing water and sanitation services.

Addressing Water Shortages

Bulawayo has steadily worked towards overcoming challenges related to water shortages, which, in recent times, have been attributed to factors such as climate variability, aging infrastructure, and growing demand. The city has diligently implemented measures to improve water provision, ensuring that this essential resource remains a top priority for the budget. The focus for 2026 aims to bolster water supply reliability and efficiency through various initiatives, including non-revenue water reduction and improvements to existing plumbing systems.

With a dedicated budget of US.5 million for recurrent expenditures and US.8 million for capital projects in the water and sanitation sector, BCC is poised to make strides in sustainable service delivery. Major investments include efforts to enhance pumping capacity and improve effluent quality, which will ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for all residents.

Comprehensive Urban Development

But the ambitions of BCC don’t just end with water services. The budget also highlights an extensive range of community initiatives, from modernizing public infrastructure with solar-powered streetlights along key roads to the rehabilitation of major public institutions. Facilities such as schools, clinics, and recreational spaces—like the Barbourfields and White City Stadiums—will see upgrades and new constructions, signaling a commitment to improving the quality of life for Bulawayo’s residents.

Furthermore, the council intends to enhance waste management by maintaining weekly refuse collection services and launching awareness campaigns to instill a culture of cleanliness among the populace.

Spanning various sectors, from health and education to infrastructure and environmental protection, Bulawayo’s budget reflects a strategic plan aimed at fostering sustainable growth and improving community resilience.

In conclusion, the BCC’s proposed budget for 2026 paints a promising picture for the future of Bulawayo, offering innovative solutions and exciting new developments while ensuring the city’s vibrant spirit continues to thrive.
