Every student deserves a roadmap to their future, and on September 4th, Westside High School delivered just that through an empowering school-based career guidance programme. Aimed at learners in grades 7, 9, and 11—including those embarking on their Advanced Subsidiary (AS) Level journey—this event was a beacon of inspiration and insight for young minds pondering their academic and career options.
The programme was rich with expertise, featuring a diverse panel that included experienced administrators, skilled lecturers, registered nurses, and psychological counsellor Marcella Katjijova from the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment Creation. Katjijova introduced students to the fascinating world of psychometric testing, a valuable tool designed to assess individual aptitudes and guide students in making informed career choices.
Adding to the wealth of information, I-Care Health Institution showcased its suite of certificate courses while announcing the exciting inclusion of pharmacy to its curriculum. Not to be outdone, the Community Skills Development Centre (COSDEC) presented its innovative practical courses in fields such as welding, plumbing, carpentry, bricklaying, and plastering. Notably, COSDEC is also offering a new course in solar installation, aligning with Namibia’s ambitious green hydrogen initiatives and goals for sustainable development.
The event also spotlighted academic options from Johnny Gamatham, a marine biologist and lecturer at the International University of Management (IUM), who discussed diploma and degree programmes in Education, Business Administration, Accounting, and Nursing. Triumphant College, with its array of programs available across Namibian campuses, also shared their entry requirements for prospective students, ensuring a comprehensive overview of educational possibilities.
Highlighting the event’s success, Elina Titus, a Life Skills teacher at Westside High, expressed her pride in the students’ enthusiasm. “The programme was highly informative and offered learners new perspectives on the vast array of career opportunities awaiting them.” Students actively engaged during the exhibition session, collecting pamphlets and conversing with representatives to further enhance their understanding of various sectors.
Through this initiative, Westside High not only equips its learners with fundamental skills but also reaffirms its commitment to fostering a future generation prepared for the demands of higher education and the broader work environment.
This career guidance programme serves as a reminder of the collective effort needed to help today’s youth navigate their paths towards successful futures.
