South African companies use WhatsApp to support deskless workers’ needs

South African companies are leveraging WhatsApp to bridge the digital divide for deskless workers.

With 93% of employees using WhatsApp for business interactions, companies are addressing the needs of the 70% to 80% of the workforce that lacks access to traditional corporate tools. This shift aims to enhance payroll access and reduce administrative burdens, ultimately improving productivity.

WhatsApp: A Game Changer for South African Workers

In South Africa, an estimated 70% to 80% of employees are frontline or deskless workers, including cleaners, security guards, and retail cashiers. Despite their crucial roles, many of these workers face challenges accessing basic services due to outdated business software that assumes employees have desk access and email addresses. This disconnect often leaves them feeling marginalized and disconnected from core operations.

As a result, 60% of deskless workers express dissatisfaction with the technology provided by their employers. They frequently need to check pay statuses or apply for leave, tasks that consume valuable time without streamlined digital tools. The administrative burden increases when numerous workers make individual inquiries, complicating payroll processes and raising the risk of errors.

Integrating WhatsApp for Enhanced Employee Access

To address these challenges, businesses are turning to WhatsApp, which is already installed on employees’ personal devices. This platform allows workers to access essential services without needing a corporate computer. By integrating WhatsApp with secure, automated self-service platforms, companies can enable workers to request payslips, apply for leave, and access vital information instantly.

Recent advancements include the introduction of AI chat agents via WhatsApp, which can answer specific employee queries. This integration not only streamlines HR processes but also relieves administrative staff from repetitive tasks, allowing them to focus on more strategic priorities.

Next Steps for WhatsApp Integration in HR

  • Continue integrating AI chat agents for employee queries.
  • Expand the use of WhatsApp for additional HR functions.
  • Monitor employee satisfaction with new digital tools.

WhatsApp is transforming how South African companies engage with their deskless workforce.
