Northam Platinum is set to revolutionize mining in South Africa with its ambitious renewable energy initiatives.
The company aims to establish the Eland mine as the first platinum group metals mine powered entirely by renewable energy. Northam Platinum’s CEO, Paul Dunne, highlighted significant financial achievements, including a 293%-plus increase in operating profit for the financial year 2026.
Northam Platinum’s Vision for Eland Mine
Northam Platinum is committed to making the Eland mine a green operation. The mine is already water positive, and the company plans to eliminate external water sources by the end of the decade. This transformation aligns with their goal of becoming a fully renewable energy-powered mine.
Dunne emphasized the importance of their renewable energy program, which includes the commissioning of an 80 MW solar farm at the Zondereinde mine. This facility will produce 220,000 MWh of energy annually, significantly reducing carbon emissions and energy costs.
Key Renewable Energy Projects Underway
Northam is advancing several renewable energy projects, including the Karreebosch wind farm and the Thakadu solar farm. The Karreebosch project will deliver around 460,000 MWh to the Eskom grid, while the Thakadu facility is set to be commissioned in mid-2027.
Additionally, Northam plans to install 360 MWh of industrial batteries to enhance energy security and optimize cost savings during peak tariff periods. This strategic move is expected to further reduce carbon emissions and energy costs across their operations.
