Jeanne Zaidel-Rudolph Reflects on Music Career and National Symbols

The evolution of South Africa’s national anthem reflects the nation’s journey towards inclusivity and unity.

Jeanne Zaidel-Rudolph, a prominent composer, played a crucial role in rearranging the national anthem for a democratic South Africa. In February 1995, she was invited to join an anthem committee tasked with creating a new version that combined two existing pieces, aiming for a duration of no longer than two minutes.

Creating a New Anthem for a New Era

The transition from apartheid to democracy in South Africa sparked a nationwide effort to establish new national symbols. Zaidel-Rudolph’s invitation to the anthem committee was a significant honor, as it represented a collective aspiration for reconciliation. The committee sought to merge the existing anthems, “Die Stem van Suid-Afrika” and “Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika,” into a single, inclusive composition.

The original anthem, “Die Stem,” was deeply rooted in Afrikaner nationalism, while “Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika” had become a symbol of resistance against oppression. The challenge was to create a version that resonated with all South Africans, reflecting the country’s diverse cultures and histories.

Challenges in the Anthem’s Composition

During the committee meetings, discussions arose about which sections of the original anthems to retain or omit. Suggestions included removing references that were not inclusive of all faiths and cultural backgrounds. Zaidel-Rudolph proposed incorporating original English lyrics to enhance the anthem’s accessibility.

The final arrangement aimed to honor the musical integrity of both pieces while ensuring it was suitable for public performance. The anthem’s structure was designed to be singable for the average citizen, with careful consideration given to key changes to facilitate this.

Next Steps for the Anthem Committee

  • Finalize the new composite version of the anthem.
  • Present the arrangement to the parliamentary cabinet for approval.
  • Plan public performances to introduce the new anthem to the nation.

The new national anthem symbolizes South Africa’s commitment to unity and diversity.
