Africazine:

Competition in South Africa’s fuel loyalty programmes is heating up as banks and fuel brands respond to rising transport costs.

Absa and Shell South Africa have introduced a new fuel benefit that offers qualifying customers up to 60% real cashback on petrol and diesel purchases, effective until July 2026. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial strain on households facing ongoing fuel price pressures.

Absa and Shell Launch Cashback Fuel Benefit

Absa customers filling up at Shell can earn double their usual Absa Rewards rate, depending on their rewards tier. Additionally, they can earn Shell V+ rewards of up to R1 per litre on fuel and up to 50 cents per litre on qualifying convenience purchases. This partnership allows customers to enjoy benefits through both Absa Rewards and Shell V+ at over 600 Shell service stations across South Africa.

After the July promotion, Absa Rewards members will still be able to earn up to 30% real cashback at Shell. This ongoing benefit highlights the importance of loyalty programmes in the current fuel market.

Impact of Loyalty Programmes on Fuel Purchases

Fuel rewards are increasingly influencing where motorists decide to fill up. According to the 2025/26 Truth and BrandMapp Loyalty Whitepaper, 48% of respondents indicated that loyalty programmes affect their fuel-buying decisions. Furthermore, 45% ranked loyalty as their second most important consideration after location.

Absa’s collaboration with two fuel partners reflects the diverse travel patterns and preferences of its customers. The intensifying competition among loyalty programmes is expected to provide motorists with greater choices, enhanced rewards, and more savings at the pump.
