South Africa’s partnership with China is deepening, reflecting mutual support and cooperation.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile emphasized the significance of this relationship, highlighting China’s contributions to infrastructure, funding, and skills development in Africa. Since diplomatic ties were established in January 1998, the relationship has evolved rapidly, culminating in the upgrade to an “all-round strategic cooperative partnership” in September 2024.

South Africa and China Strengthen Bilateral Ties

In an interview during the fourth China International Supply Chain Expo in Beijing, Mashatile discussed the comprehensive development of ties between South Africa and China. He noted that their collaboration spans various sectors, significantly enhancing their partnership.

Both nations work closely in multilateral institutions, aligning strategies and supporting each other on platforms like FOCAC and the G20. This cooperation underscores their commitment to mutual growth and development.

China’s Role in Africa’s Development

Mashatile acknowledged China’s vital role in Africa’s progress, particularly in infrastructure projects. He pointed out that Chinese companies are actively involved in building essential structures such as roads, bridges, and dams across the continent.

This support is not merely theoretical; it includes tangible contributions of expertise, funding, and skills transfer to local communities, which South Africa values highly. The relationship is seen as a friendship that benefits both nations.
