The Gautrain is set to expand its rail network significantly, enhancing connectivity across Gauteng.

As it marks 16 years of operation, the Gautrain plans to extend its services to Soweto, Randburg, Lanseria, and Boksburg. The proposed Gauteng Rapid Rail Integrated Network includes new stations and links, aiming to improve mobility for residents and visitors alike.

Gautrain’s Expansion Plans for Gauteng

The Gautrain aims to extend its rail network from Marlboro Station to Little Falls, with new stations planned for Randburg and Cosmo City. Additionally, a rail link from Little Falls to Soweto is proposed, passing through Roodepoort and Jabulani. Future connections to Lanseria, Mamelodi, and Boksburg are also in the works.

Gautrain Management Agency chairperson, Prof Mfanelo Ntsobi, emphasized the importance of these expansions in connecting people to jobs, education, and leisure opportunities. The service has evolved into a vital mobility solution for the region.

Key Features of the Gautrain Service

Gautrain’s KlevaMova product, which offers a 50% discount on train fares, now accounts for about 11% of all passenger trips. This discount is available to qualifying households earning R350,000 or less annually, as well as to scholars, pensioners, and Sassa disability grant recipients.

Despite the Gauteng government taking control of the rail system, commuters can expect no disruption to services. The Gautrain continues to maintain an average availability and punctuality rate of over 95%, adapting to changing travel patterns post-Covid-19.

Future Developments and Vision

  • Appointment of a new private partner for operation and maintenance over the next 15 years.
  • Integration of rail, buses, taxis, and e-hailing services to enhance mobility.
  • Expansion of the rail network to include new stations and connections.

The Gautrain’s expansion reflects a commitment to improving transport connectivity across Gauteng.
