Africazine:

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has set the filing dates for the 2026 tax season, introducing key improvements to enhance the taxpayer experience.

Taxpayers will benefit from expanded auto assessments and digital services, streamlining the filing process. The filing periods for provisional taxpayers run from July 1 to July 12, 2026, while non-provisional taxpayers must file between July 13 and October 23, 2026, or by January 22, 2027, for provisional taxpayers.

2026 Tax Season Filing Dates Announced

SARS has outlined specific filing dates for different taxpayer categories. Provisional taxpayers, who earn income from various sources, are encouraged to file early to avoid last-minute rushes. Non-provisional taxpayers, typically salaried employees, have simpler tax affairs and may qualify for auto assessments.

Auto assessments are generated using data from employers, banks, and other institutions, allowing qualifying taxpayers to receive refunds directly into their bank accounts. Notifications will be sent via SMS or email to those selected for auto assessments, indicating whether they owe money or are due a refund.

Key Enhancements for Taxpayers

This year, SARS has introduced several enhancements aimed at simplifying the filing process. These include additional prefilled information on returns, clearer wording on tax forms, and improved guidance on tax residency declarations. The redesigned eFiling platform features better navigation and new alerts to minimize errors.

Taxpayers are advised to verify their banking and contact details before the filing season begins. SARS also warns of increased scams and phishing attempts during this period, urging taxpayers to utilize its secure digital platforms for accessing services.

Upcoming Filing Deadlines and Recommendations

  • Provisional taxpayers: July 1 to July 12, 2026
  • Non-provisional taxpayers: July 13 to October 23, 2026
  • Provisional taxpayers: Deadline by January 22, 2027

Taxpayers should prepare their documents early and review auto assessments carefully before acceptance.

Taxpayers in South Africa can expect a more streamlined filing process for the 2026 tax season.
