West Africa faces a critical energy challenge, with rural electrification lagging despite abundant renewable resources.
The ECOWAS Parliament has called for accelerated investment in renewable energy to enhance rural electrification and economic activities. This appeal was made during the opening of a key meeting in Dakar, Senegal, focused on harnessing renewable energy for rural empowerment.
ECOWAS Parliament Advocates for Renewable Energy Investment
The ECOWAS Parliament’s recent meeting emphasized the urgent need for investment in renewable energy. Hon. Billay Tunkara highlighted that renewable energy is essential for transforming economic activities, especially in rural areas. Access to reliable energy can significantly support local agricultural processing and promote small businesses.
Despite the region’s vast solar, wind, and hydroelectric potential, renewable energy constitutes less than 20 percent of West Africa’s energy mix. Tunkara called for a collective effort to make rural electrification a catalyst for economic empowerment, particularly for women and youth.
Current State of Rural Electrification in West Africa
Access to electricity for rural households in the ECOWAS region is alarmingly low, capped at around 12 percent. Hon. Guy Marius Sagna expressed concern over this disparity, noting that the region has exceptional solar potential yet struggles with low rural electricity access. The gap between available resources and their utilization presents a significant challenge.
Chair of the Joint Committee, Hon. Fanta Conte, pointed out that less than 40 percent of the rural population has electricity access, with some areas falling below 10 percent. This lack of access hampers healthcare, education, and economic opportunities, particularly for women and youth.
Next Steps for Renewable Energy Development
- Develop recommendations to strengthen rural electrification.
- Mobilize investments for renewable energy projects.
- Promote the implementation of ECOWAS energy policies at the national level.
- Conduct field visits to renewable energy projects in Senegal.
Efforts to enhance rural electrification through renewable energy are crucial for the region’s development and empowerment.
