South Africa’s domestic car sales show a robust increase despite economic challenges.

In May, domestic car sales reached 51,071 units, marking a 12.8% rise compared to May 2025. New-energy vehicle sales surged by 120% during the same period, indicating a shift in consumer preferences.

Strong Growth in South Africa’s Car Market

The latest figures reveal a thriving automotive sector in South Africa. The new passenger car market saw sales of 36,871 units, a 16.3% increase from last year. Light commercial vehicles, including bakkies and minibuses, also performed well with 11,251 units sold, reflecting a 2.5% gain.

Medium commercial vehicle sales reached 718 units, up by 13.6%, while heavy trucks and buses recorded 2,231 units sold, a 12.9% increase. These numbers highlight a positive trend in the automotive market, despite external pressures such as rising fuel prices.

Key Players in the Automotive Sector

Toyota continues to lead the market as South Africa’s favorite brand, achieving 10,667 sales last month. Following Toyota are Suzuki Auto and Volkswagen Group, which also contributed to the overall sales growth. The motor industry body Naamsa noted that purchasing decisions are increasingly influenced by total cost of ownership, which is driving the demand for new-energy vehicles.
