The Electoral Commission of Zambia has clarified the increase in polling stations for the upcoming 2026 General Election.
Polling stations will rise from 12,152 in 2021 to 13,529 in 2026, but this change does not indicate the creation of new voting centres. Instead, it reflects the need for additional voting rooms at existing centres to accommodate an increased voter registration of 8,786,300.
Zambia’s Electoral Commission Explains Polling Station Increase
Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro emphasized that the increase in polling stations is a response to a growing number of registered voters. The number of voting centres remains stable at about 9,000, but the additional polling stations will help manage the larger voter population.
Kasaro noted that each voting centre can house multiple polling stations, which are essentially different voting rooms. For example, the University of Zambia Sports Hall serves as one voting centre but may contain several polling rooms, each functioning as a separate polling station.
